Eleven Plus Sheep

The very nature of much of the present eleven plus `so called syllabus’ is that much of the work children do is determined by a `teaching situation’ rather than a `learning situation’. Eleven plus children have to learn approaches to a wide variety of questions and have to assimilate a number of facts and `methods’. Some have to be taught – others they can discover for themselves.

The point behind all the hours of preparation and exhortations by parents and teachers is that the children peak in those few hours of the examination.

Of course helping children to pass the eleven plus is not like herding sheep into a pen. Some years ago there was a popular program called (I think): “One Man and His Dog”. Here the shepherd was expected to herd his or her dog across an uneven terrain and then through a series of gates before ending the task in a pen. The dogs were trained to respond to shouted signals and whistles. Speed and accuracy mattered.

The sheep, however, were not the stars – it was the dogs.

Eleven plus bells and whistle contain at least some key pointers:

A few eleven plus papers are probably better that no papers.

Too many papers may spoil the child.

Too much pressure can be counter productive.

A completed paper is probably more valuable than an “I’ll do it later” promise.

Children must learn some things for themselves – they can not be force fed all the time.

Online Tuition

We have been running online classes over the past few months. Children enjoy the technology. Parents love the idea that the expensive computer they bought is working to its full potential.

In the lessons children can write on a whiteboard, they can use a pen to draw or write on the screen and can generally enjoy themselves while they are learning.

We would welcome your comments on your reaction to on-line learning.

Extra Tuition Website

Another dull and overcast day today outside.

In side HQ in Gravesend today we were very busy with new and existing parents.

Our teachers build and prepare their own lesson plans off our web enabled program etcACTION.

Parenst can also log onto their child's website and make alterations and suggestions about the development and nature of lessons.
